What Is a Pure Sequence in Rummy? Examples & Rules

The one meld every valid Indian rummy declaration depends on — defined, demonstrated and drilled. Parent topic: 13-card rummy rules.

Definition (One Line)

Pure sequence = 3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit, with no joker substitution. It is the only meld that can never be "bought" with wild cards, and your whole declaration is void without it.

12 Real Examples

3-card runs

4♥5♥6♥
9♣10♣J♣
8♦9♦10♦

4-card runs

5♠6♠7♠8♠
2♦3♦4♦5♦
Q♥K♥A♥ (ace-high)

5-card runs

4♣5♣6♣7♣8♣
3♠4♠5♠6♠7♠
A♠2♠3♠4♠ (ace-low)

Card Values Inside a Pure Sequence

Card in runCounts as
Number cards (2–10)0 penalty points once melded
Ace (in A-2-3 or Q-K-A position)0 points once joined in the run
Face cards J/Q/K0 points once joined in the run

The Wild-Joker Exception Everyone Gets Wrong

If the wild rank is 7 and you build 5♦-6♦-7♦-8♦, that's still a pure sequence — because 7♦ is being played as the natural 7 of diamonds, not as a wild card. But Joker inside any run = impure. Full joker behaviour: joker card guide.
