The Drop Cost Ladder

ActionPoints RummyTypical Pool Run
First drop (no turn taken)20 pointsCheapest exit — early deals
Second drop (turns begun)40 pointsRises near pool end (often 40–80)
Full count (hand lost)Up to 80Scarifies ladder position badly

When First Drop Is the Right Call

When Second Drop Beats Pressing On

Turns have started, your pure sequence is still theoretical, and open-pile action shows a rival is four cards from declaring. A 40-point second drop is five times cheaper than a full count — maths: scoring guide.

When NOT to Drop

🧠 Rule of thumb: if a full count would cost more than 4× the drop cost and you see no path to a valid declaration in five turns, drop.
